Upgrading PBS plan capacity
You can upgrade your PBS datastore storage capacity at any time from the client portal, with no downtime and without recreating the datastore.
Your data, configuration, snapshots, and retention policy are fully preserved during the tier change.
Available tiers
| Capacity | Price excl. tax / month |
|---|---|
| 250 GB | €2 |
| 500 GB | €4 |
| 1 TB | €8 |
| 2 TB | €16 |
| 4 TB | €32 |
| 6 TB | €48 |
| 8 TB | €64 |
| 10 TB | €80 |
Pricing reference: PBS offer page.
Upgrade procedure
- Open your PBS service in the client portal
- Click the Modify plan tab
- Select the new capacity tier on the slider
- Verify the chosen capacity and displayed price
- Confirm the change
The additional capacity is immediately available on the datastore.
Estimating real capacity needs with deduplication
PBS deduplication significantly reduces physical space consumed. To estimate your real need:
Estimated space = (Gross VM size × Number of snapshots kept) × (1 - deduplication rate)
In practice, on typical workloads:
| Environment | Typical deduplication rate |
|---|---|
| VMs with lots of identical data (OS templates, clones) | 70 – 90% |
| Diverse production VMs | 50 – 70% |
| Database or highly varied file backups | 20 – 40% |
The current deduplication ratio is shown in the Dashboard tab → Deduplication metric (e.g. 6.42×). Use it to refine your estimates.
When to plan a capacity upgrade?
Signs it's time to upgrade:
| Signal | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| Estimated saturation < 30 days | Plan the upgrade |
| Usage > 80% | Upgrade before reaching the limit |
| Need to extend retention | Calculate the additional space required |
| Adding new Proxmox nodes | Anticipate the additional volume |
Always keep at least 20% free space on your datastore. This margin absorbs temporary spikes (snapshot before a major update) and the time lag of an upgrade.
What is preserved during a tier change
- All existing snapshots
- Prune job configuration
- GC schedule
- Verification jobs
- Namespaces and their hierarchy
- Configured tokens and access credentials
